COLLEGEPARKPAPER.COM JANUARY 2016 When I received the interview correspondence with Joseph Esteban and opened the photo he attached, I could only mutter, “Wow!” The variety of subjects in the paintings he displays, the brilliant colors surrounded by the bustle of life anonymously moving in the foreground, the majestic architecture in muted shades of gray — it all grabbed me right away. It seemed passionate and understated, open and intimate at the same time. And I couldn’t believe the prices: Was he only charging for materials? I started to understand his artistic decisions when I realized that for Joseph, art is foremost a hobby which is very gradually beginning to generate income at art shows and fairs and through www.jestebangallery. etsy.com. Esteban talks about what it felt to realize that he is a genuine artist, that people appreciate his work, and that they are glad to pay for it. “It was a different feeling when I sold my first painting,” he says. “To me it was a validation as an artist. Someone saw the value in my art and was willing to pay for an original.” Esteban also speaks of the soothing experience of creating art. “It’s a great way to express myself and to explore the mind. It also helps me to unwind and get away from the ‘real world.’” Although he has dabbled in every possible medium, including collage and Chinese brush painting, Esteban is not done with his artistic education and looks forward to his first pottery class next year. A resident of College Park since 1998, he is quite vehement about old architecture. “I love the small details you see on old buildings that are often nonexistent in modern architecture,” the artist says. “So, I would have to say the old homes in College Park are inspiring to me. Also, there are a couple of Art Deco buildings on Edgewater Drive that I admire when I am walking my dog.” Besides visual arts, Esteban also values the performing arts and supports the Central Florida Arts at his regular job. He is convinced that College Park needs the Arts and Theatre Center to become a reality. He observes, “We currently have great shopping and dining. An Arts and Theatre Center would help to solidify College Park as a destination with the city of Orlando.” I decided if I had any money left when I finished my Christmas shopping, I would treat myself to Joseph Esteban’s “Vase of Red Roses” oil painting. I hope it’s hanging on my wall by the time you read this! Art Park inthe JANUARY ARts calendar By Nylda Dieppa 4 Songwriter’s Stage Share your original music and win a prize. Downtown Credo (706 W.
