His longtime passion to bring big band music to life with every opportunity was evident from the moment we started talking. As I listened to his band rehearse, barely containing myself in my seat, I knew the vision of The Crew Big Band’s founder went beyond just playing an instrument. This was an artist wanting to give a taste of life to those willing to share in the experience. “Music is my art form,” he said. “And I have been fortunate to have played on the same stage as many of my idols.” In his 80-plus years, Lohr has managed to mix a full-time career with a love for music. Before his retirement, he was an information engineer and principal consultant with Lockheed Martin. But the music never left him. He started The Crew Big Band in 2009 and has never looked back. “I have had a traditional business career while my musical ambitions have always taken a backseat up until my retirement,” said Lohr. “Now, my musical activities have become all consuming.” Not only does Lohr play with The Crew, but he also participates in several other swing bands and two concert bands, as do many other performers in the band. (The Orlando Concert Band and the VFW Post 2093 Community Band are two of them.) The Crew is a full 19-piece swing band consisting of five saxophones, eight brass, four rhythm and two vocalists. They have played at dances, festivals, conventions and special occasions throughout Central Florida. The VFW Post 2093 Community Band plays annually at our own Sunday in the Park. The Crew uses College Park’s VFW Post 2093 facility on Edgewater Drive for its weekly rehearsals. “The band is a result of a desire,” said Lohr. “A desire I have had to provide an outlet and facility for local talented musicians to apply their special talents and recreate The Big Band sounds of yesterday and today which is our rich heritage of the Swing and Jazz era.” The musicians in the band are varied and come from many years of experience. Several members have played with notable bands and orchestras both popular and classical, and they have been onstage with numerous legends and jazz giants. The band has an extensive library that includes original works arranged by current and past members. They bring back the memories of the big band greats such as Artie Shaw, Harry James, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey and many others. Lohr is an avid supporter of the College Park community and sees great potential in having our own Arts & Theatre Center. “The CPN Arts venue will offer so much additional opportunity to College Park to expand in all facets of the art forms which it can support,” he said. “Legitimate theatre, musicals, band concerts with front-liner talent, dances, specialty hosted talent events and recitals. With aggressive and farsighted management together with community support it will indeed be exciting to the whole community extending even beyond College Park.” You can come meet and hear Don Lohr and The Crew Big Band at the upcoming CPN Art Center’s Benefit Gala February 25 at the historic Dubsdread Ballroom.
