Each day this month, they will be highlighting a different African- American whose positive contributions helped to make our community, our country and our world a better place. On the morning announcements, they will be showcasing and discussing books about different African- Americans who have made an impact in our lives. Students will be learning about important people and events that took place in history. Literacy curriculum night We had a fantastic time at our Literacy Curriculum Night on Wednesday, January 20th. This Curriculum Night coincided with Report Card Conference Night. Parents and students were able to meet with teachers to discuss academic progress. Families were then encouraged to join faculty and staff in the cafetorium for a Book Swap, interactive stations set up at each grade level with literacy activities, Accelerated Reader activities on iPads and many other literacy related activities. A big thank you to our Lake Silver Reading Coach, Carla Thompson, for helping to plan this wonderful evening of activities and to our 5th grade gifted students who helped to plan and run the event! Celebrate Literacy Week Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! was the week of January 25th. This year’s theme was “Literacy Changes Our World”. The goal of this year’s Celebrate Literacy Week was to promote literacy throughout Lake Silver as well as good citizenship in school and in the community! We had a school - wide poster contest and door decorating contest along with daily activities in celebration of reading. Diabetes awareness Lake Silver students and staff learned a lot about Diabetes from Mrs. Daniel's 3rd graders during Diabetes Awareness Month. The students made posters to display around school, shared facts about Diabetes on Tiger TV and encouraged the whole school to wear blue or gray in honor of our students with Diabetes. Multiplication Madness Our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders are having a rocking good time learning and memorizing their multiplication facts with our “Multiplication Madness” program. Each week students focus on a different times table. Students sing, chant, write and practice their multiplication tables at school, at home and on the morning announcements and have friendly compe- titions with other classes on their grade level. Ms. Messen- ger’s 3rd grade class wrote a multiplication song to the tune of “Watch Me” and performed it for the school on Tiger TV. Thanks to our Math Coach, Tricia Rowe, for planning and coordinating the exciting activities!
